Map Section D.

In the northeast corner of this map is a large conglomeration of "ambergris" or whale sperm, which sometimes "spreads far and wide across the sea, stuck together in lumps of various shapes, greyish-blue in colour with a tinge of white" (Magnus 1998, III:1101).

Whale sperm on the ocean.

Magnus reports that sailors collect it and sell it to physicians, who purify it and use it as a medicine against gout and palsy.
