To the elk, Olaus Magnus ascribes medicinal properties, as follows: "The outer hoof of the back right foot of a male elk that has not sired, cut from the live animal with an axe or removed by some other instrument after mid-August, will promptly cure convulsions or epilepsy if it is applied to the afflicted person" (Magnus 1998, III:882)
