Map Section I.

Above the bears, an armored horseman has his sword drawn. He is clearly in trouble, though, as his horse is being gored by an aurochs.

Aurochs attack the knight.

About it Olaus writes: "An aurochs, then, is one of a species of wild cattle, so savage and strong that with its horns it can lift an armoured soldier from his horse and dash him to the ground" (Magnus 1998, III:917). This animal, now extinct, is thought to be an ancestor of domesticated cattle.
