Herberstein undertook two embassies to Moscow on behalf of the Holy Roman Empire, in 1516 and 1519. His account of Russia was first published in 1549. It became the most popular description of Russia in the sixteenth century and was enhanced with numerous illustrations and maps, including this view of Moscow.
