Hanway, Jonas

An historical account of the British trade over the Caspian Sea. 4 vols. London, Dodsley [etc.] 1753.

“A map of the routs of the Russian embassy to Persia in 1746 ” Vol. I, p. 345.

Hanway was a partner in an English commercial firm in St. Petersburg. In representing the firm’s interests he travelled to Persia by way of the Caspian Sea in 1743 –1746, reporting his own travels and quoting from others as well. Similarly the maps included in his account reflect the travels of others, Russian surveys, and his own experience.
