Near the bottom of this section men seated on little islands of ice are hunting;
to their right a squirrel with his tail raised for a sail is crossing a lake on a chunk of ice. About squirrels in the Historia Olaus writes: "Their frolics over the frozen surface of snow are a pure delight to watch" (Magnus 1998, III:899).
To the right and slightly above the squirrel, men are building a boat, fastening it together with tendons and roots. It is built in the clinker-built style, with overlapping boards.
