The voyage of the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama from Lisbon around the Cape of Good Hope to Melinde on the east coast of Africa and across the Indian Ocean to Calicut revealed the sea route from Europe to the Indies.

In a section on geography Reisch provides a Ptolemaic map of the world showing the Indian Ocean enclosed by land.

On his globe Waldseemüller portrayed the seas that led to the East, to India and beyond.
